Color me confused, but when the homie Steve Pristin hit me with an email titled, “My directorial debut,” I thought he was kidding. Ok, so I’d never seen a Pristin-produced music video, nor did I even know what exactly Steve did, but I had no doubt it involved the word #swagassi. As Steve tells me, “I’ve done a lot of documentary work but that is the first music video I directed.”
And the eerie/most fascinating part, “We were doing an ode to Whitney Houston’s ‘How Will I Know’ music video and then she sadly passed away. Consequently, the music video became my homage.”
So this is my first time hearing about Gordon Voidwell, but something in my foggy memories of undergrad tells me I have met this cat under another alias. Regardless, Mr. Pristin and Mr. Voidwell offer up one of the best odes to Ms. Houston I’ve come across since her untimely passing. I can remember the “How Will I Know” video as being one of Whitney’s biggest and one of my personal favorites and as a young Atlanta kid starting to learn what an attractive woman was and growing upset that all females didn’t have the same voice as this girl.
I will be doing my homework on Gordon Voidwell and I’m definitely excited about whatever else Steve has on the horizon. Fellas, somewhere Whitney is smiling at your visual and dancing to the music.
